A 1950s C- type Jaguar, driven by experienced driver Joe Said, crashed into an electricity pole in Great Siege Road near the Excelsior Hotel this morning during the first practice run.. No one was injured but the front part of the Jag was heavily damaged. The incident brought out the safety car and interrupted the time trials, causing substantial delay in the schedule. A Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, driven by Gerald J. Zammit, also spun on the final turn near the Phoenicia Hotel, but the driver managed to keep it on the road without colliding with anything and he carried on to finish the race. Gerald J. Zammit commented "Its a great event and a great circuit. Pity the road surface is not ideal for racing conditions.Last year a fellow UK Race driver - Mark Hales, descibed the circuit as driving on polished ice and one could not describe it any better". He added "Joe Said was very unlucky with his fanastic C Type Jag. Three of his four children are participating this year. I know how eager Joe was to drive the full circuit, but it will not be happening this year. I am certain how Joe's Jag collection is impeccably kept it will not be too long before the C Type will be repaired to its former glory".
